There are many arguments and think pieces in the world we live in today about the deity of Jesus but one thing will always prevail, the truth.

And the truth is this: Jesus is God. He’s not just a messenger, not just a miracle worker, not just a teacher. He is fully God and fully man.

As believers, this is not a side belief. It’s foundational to our faith, and that’s why this article will be discussing the deity of Jesus, key scriptures that affirm Jesus’ deity and everything you need to know about it.

Why is it Important to Know The Deity Of Jesus?

Understanding the deity of Jesus is foundational to the Christian faith because it shapes everything we believe about salvation, grace, and our relationship with God.

There’s a lot we may not fully understand in the Christian journey, but one thing we cannot afford to be vague about is who Jesus is.

Knowing and understanding the deity of Jesus is not some “deep theology” for only pastors or Bible scholars. It’s for every believer. Why? Because everything we believe as Christians stands or falls on that truth.

Here are reasons why it is important to know scriptures;

#1. Our Faith is Built on it.

Jesus isn’t just a good man, a prophet, or a moral teacher. He is God in the flesh. That is the foundation of our faith. Without this truth, Christianity becomes just another religion with nice ideas.

John 1:1 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Then verse 14 tells us, “The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us.” That is Jesus, fully God, fully man.

As Christians, believing in the deity of Jesus is not optional, it is essential. Romans 10:9 reminds us that, “If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”

Lord in this verse doesn’t just mean “master,” it means divine, God Himself.

#2. Our Identity.

If Jesus is not God, then what are we even doing? Who are we in Him?

The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come.” We are “in Christ”, united with Him. We share in His life, His righteousness, and His victory.

Colossians 2:9-10 says, “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness.” That means we draw our identity, strength, and confidence from Him because He is God.

If you don’t understand who He is, you’ll live below the identity and authority that comes from being in Him.

Evangelism: Be Ready to Give a Reason For The Faith You Have.

People have questions. And in today’s world, everybody has an opinion about Jesus. Some say He was just a prophet, others say He was a revolutionary. But we know He is God, and we must be able to say why.

1 Peter 3:15 encourages us to, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” Our hope is not in a wise man who lived long ago. It is in the living Son of God who died and rose again.

When we share our faith, the deity of Christ is what makes the Gospel good news. Only God could live a sinless life, take our place, and rise again. That’s why it matters that we know and can boldly say—Jesus is God!

Bible Verses about the Deity of Jesus.

Let’s consider how the Bible can uplift, console, and help us develop a closer relationship with God in addition to these thoughts. Be in the mode of meditation as we read through God’s Word and discover why the Bible holds such an important place in our hearts and lives.

Let us look at some scriptures to know exactly why we should know that Jesus is God ;

#1. Exodus 3:14 – God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.'” Jesus later in John 8:58 “Truly, truly, I tell you,” Jesus declared, “before Abraham was born, I am!”

#2. John 1:14 – The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

#3. John 1:1-3 – In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made, and without Him nothing was made that has been made.

#4. Colossians 2:9 – For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily.

#5. Hebrews 1:3 – The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His nature, upholding all things by His powerful word. After He had provided purification for sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.

#6. Philippians 2:6 – Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to.

#7. Isaiah 9:6 – For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

#8. Revelation 1:17-18 – the First and the Last. I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive forever and ever!

#9. Titus 2:13 – While we wait for the blessed hope—the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ.

#10. Daniel 7:13-14 – As my vision continued that night, I saw someone who looked like a man coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient One and was led into his presence. He was given authority, honor, and royal power over all the nations of the world, so that people of every race and nation and language would obey him. His rule is eternal–it will never end. His kingdom will never be destroyed.

Is Jesus God?

Yes. A resounding yes. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible reveals Jesus not just as a messenger of God, but as God in the flesh. Let’s examine further why we believe that Jesus is God.

He Declared Himself to be God.

Take for example the words of Jesus in John 10:30, “I and the Father are one.” We need only to look at the Jews’ reaction to His statement to know He was claiming to be God.

They tried to stone Him for this very reason: “You, a mere man, claim to be God” The Jews understood exactly what Jesus was claiming “deity”. When Jesus declared, “I and the Father are one,” He was saying that He and the Father are of one nature and essence.

John 8:58 is another example. Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth … before Abraham was born, I am!” This is a reference back to Exodus 3:14 when God revealed Himself as the “I AM.” The Jews who heard this statement responded by taking up stones to kill Him for blasphemy, as the Mosaic Law commanded (Leviticus 24:16).

Even His Followers Declared Him to be God.

John reiterates the concept of Jesus’ deity: “The Word [Jesus] was God” and “the Word became flesh” (John 1:1, 14). These verses clearly indicate that Jesus is God in the flesh.

Acts 20:28 tells us, “Be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own blood.” Who bought the church with His own blood? Jesus Christ. And this same verse declares that God purchased His church with His own blood. Therefore, Jesus is God.

Thomas the disciple declared concerning Jesus, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28). Jesus does not correct him. Titus 2:13 encourages us to wait for the coming of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ (see also 2 Peter 1:1).

The Father Declared Him to be God.

In Hebrews 1:8, the Father declares of Jesus, “But about the Son He says, ‘Your throne, O God, will last forever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom.’” The Father refers to Jesus as God, indicating that Jesus is indeed God.

He Was Worshipped and He Did What Only God Can Do.

In Revelation, an angel instructed the apostle John to only worship God (Revelation 19:10).

But several times in Scripture Jesus received worship (Matthew 2:11; 14:33; 28:9, 17; Luke 24:52; John 9:38). He never rebukes people for worshiping Him. If Jesus were not God, He would have told people to not worship Him, just as the angel in Revelation did.

The most important reason that Jesus must be God is that, if He is not God, His death would not have been sufficient to pay the penalty for the sins of the world (1 John 2:2).

A created being, which Jesus would be if He were not God, could not pay the infinite penalty required for sin against an infinite God. Only God could pay such an infinite penalty. Only God could take on the sins of the world (2 Corinthians 5:21), die, and be resurrected, proving His victory over sin and death.

The provision of salvation only works if Jesus is God. Jesus is God incarnate, the eternal Alpha and Omega (Revelation 1:8; 22:13), and God our Savior (2 Peter 1:1). Wow, what a paragraph explaining our lord and savior.

When people try to reduce Jesus to prophet status or other things but then say his full name “Jesus Christ” they score an own goal because Christ means messiah and a messiah can only be God.

Conclusion.

Jesus is God, He declared Himself to be God, His followers believed Him to be God, and The Father acknowledged that He is God.

The deity of Jesus is not just a theological concept; it is the very heartbeat of our Christian faith. Knowing and believing that Jesus is God changes everything. It transforms how we see the cross, how we relate to God, and how we live each day.

The above scriptures are not just verses to memorize; they are anchors for our faith, reminders of who Jesus truly is, and a call to worship Him with awe and reverence.
